Lead Recovery and Maintenance
Central Jersey Rifle and Pistol Club
Overview: Central Jersey Rifle and Pistol Club (CJRP) contacted MT2 to perform its first trap clean out of their indoor range located in Jackson, NJ. The range, which was constructed approximately two years before the maintenance activities, has a Meggitt LE7500 reclining trap system.
MT2 Services: The system is comprised of a granulated rubber bullet containment area of 30’ wide and covered with rubber mats to contain the Grantex media. MT2 services included the installation of a dust containment system to minimize contamination of other portions of the rear portions of the range, extraction of the trap materials, separation of the Grantex from the bullets, replacement of the Grantex, HEPA vacuuming the trap and other exposed portions of the range, and minor maintenance to the system. These maintenance activities including tighten and/or replace any loose or missing nuts and bolts on the bullet trap, add additional new rubber media as necessary to rebuild the back stop, and groom the slope to re-establish correct pitch/ angle of back stop. MT2 utilized a TrapVac system in order separate lead from rubber trap material for recycling and to reuse the rubber. It is estimated that MT2 was able to recover approximately 95% of bullets and large lead fragments.
Outcome: The Grantex was re-installed and the impact area groomed according to manufacturer’s requirements. MT2 collected the separated bullet/bullet fragments and placed them in 55-gallon drums and some smaller containers for the club to make available to their members for recycling.
Commercial Indoor Operating Range Maintenance and Cleanup
The Firing Line, CO
Overview: MT2 performed bi-annual trap clean out of the Firing Line indoor range to improve shooter safety and meet strict regulatory standards.
MT2 Services: MT2 firing range maintenance tasks included: installing a double containment system prior to starting the work to confine the work area and protect the rest of the facility during work activities; installing a negative air system to increase air flow to protect MT2 workers and the facility from potential lead dust; removing rubber granules and lead from the rubber bullet trap; utilizing MT2’s TrapVac’s to separate the lead from rubber granules for lead reclamation and recycling; re-installing rubber back onto the berm to an improved condition; and HEPA vacuuming and decontaminating the work area for final shooting range cleanup. The lead collected was a very high value and was recycled to offset project costs; a certificate of recycling was issued to the Firing Line.
Outcome: Firing Line received an improved range to protect the patrons from potential ricochet hazard and lead dust in the environment. MT2’s proprietary lead recovery systems provided the client with the highest recycle value to off-set project costs.
