The Importance of Indoor Firing Range Cleaning and Maintaining Air Ventilation Systems

June 22, 2016 by Range Defender Leave a Comment

Indoor gun ranges are increasing in popularity and it means that for some ranges, improving how they deal with OSHA violations, such as high levels of lead, are a necessity. So with fines being given at hundreds of thousands of dollars a pop, here is a quick way to crack down on what exactly is going on and how gun ranges can resolve issues that high levels of lead can cause. MT2 is the #1 and Largest Nationwide Professional Lead Reclamation & Maintenance Contractor for BOTH Indoor & Outdoor Firing Ranges.

How exactly is the lead contaminating the gun ranges?

When you shoot a firearm that uses ammunition containing lead it can generate dust or fumes that also contain the lead. This can affect those shooting the firearm as well as those who have to clean up the gun range. Most of the lead is airborne but once on someone’s hands or skin, other common cleaning materials used for guns can cause the lead to stick to the skin and make it more difficult to wash off. Lead can also stick to clothes posing the threat of lead poisoning to anyone in contact with that person, specifically children.

So how can gun ranges and visitors reduce exposure to lead?

Reduce the use of ammunition that contains lead. It greatly reduces the risk of exposure to lead particles since you don’t have to worry about fumes dust containing lead in the first place. and if you ARE going to use ammunition that contains lead, think twice before eating or drinking in that area. Another great measure would be to frequently wash hands thoroughly after handling an object that had possibly been exposed to lead.

Employers and Employees should take precautions such as investing in an effective ventilation system that can lower the intensity of airborne lead. Firing ranges can contact a professional to install the correct ventilation system. Employees and workers can also wear protective clothing to eliminate the exposure of lead to skin and clothing. Gloves and respirators can make all the difference when cleaning lead exposed equipment or being in a lead exposed room in general.

These simple measures and precautions may not seem like much but it can greatly diminish someone’s exposure to lead, taking away the risk for lead poisoning and other health concerns.
