MT2 has been working with Dale Krupinski, Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), for several years and he was the obvious choice to bring onboard as our in-house CIH. Dale is a former OSHA Compliance Officer with an understanding of range operations.
Below is an interview with him so that you can learn more about how this will benefit your firing range.
What is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)?
A Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is an individual who has extensive education and industrial hygiene experience, and through examination, has demonstrated a superior level of knowledge and skills in occupational safety and health.
What type of examination does a CIH undergo?
All CIHs must successfully complete a 5 hour written exam that only 40 percent of the examinees pass. In addition, CIHs must maintain their certification by either taking the written exam every five years or completing numerous continuing education courses.
Why would a gun range need a CIH?
A CIH helps collect essential exposure and ventilation data onsite so the range management team can make sound management decisions based on data.
What type of exposure data would a CIH collect?
A CIH collects personal noise and airborne lead data during the busiest range times to establish a worst-case exposure scenario. In addition, a CIH assesses lead surface levels throughout the range and air velocities on the range to measure the effectiveness of housekeeping and ventilation.
Why do ranges need to collect such data?
Personal exposure monitoring is required by numerous OSHA standards. Ranges need this data to determine how much of the OSHA regulations will apply to their operations.
Can’t anyone collect this data?
Sure. Just like anyone could file a range’s tax return. However, most ranges want to hire a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Hiring a CIH to collect your occupational exposure data is considered best management practice.
Will the collection of this data interfere with my range operations?
Absolutely not. The equipment used to collect this data is worn by selected staff throughout the entire shift and will not interfere with their range duties.
