Lead build-up and potential lead exposure on a shooting range happens, but the situation can be made safer when range owners institute easy ways to mitigate lead exposure for their employees, shooters and community. Safety is the most important concern for everyone who visits a firing range, and in order to ensure a safe experience regular firing range maintenance is a necessity. Firing ranges face increasing scrutiny for the effect they have on the environment, and a key aspect of maintaining a firing range is the recovery of lead from the backstops or soil, and minimizing the impact lead has on the environment.
Range cleaning and de-leading services are imperative for any firing range to employ. However, the frequency and type of cleaning needed may vary from range to range as there are cost-considerations. Factors like intensity of firing and number of rounds fired determine the frequency of cleaning. De-leading and cleaning services can be done daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or on an annual basis.
When a gun range takes steps to not only maintain their range, but to have professional lead reclamation performed to ensure their range lead and dead dust is contained well, their employees, shooters and community all benefit.
This was the case recently with a police range in Apopka Florida who decided to optimize their care for the community with Firing Range Lead Reclamation and Maintenance
MT2 Firing Range Services was selected to provide cost-effective firing range lead reclamation and maintenance at the City’s firing range located in Florida. Lead maintenance and reclamation focused on the backstop berms and impact areas. Project tasks included excavation, screening/processing soils to recover lead fragments, guaranteed ECOBOND® treatment of lead-impacted soils per EPA recommended Best Management Practices, berm reconstruction, and recycling of the lead. Berm reconstruction included improvement to raise the berm height.
MT2 placed an additional 500 cubic yards of soil onto the main backstop berm of Range 1. The height was increased to approximately 15 feet. The soil was placed and graded with heavy equipment.
All work was performed in accordance with the contract as well as with applicable trade practices, laws, ordinances, rules and regulations of federal, state, and local authorities regarding the handling, treatment, excavation and direct loadout of lead contaminated materials. MT2 recovered and recycled over 5,000 pounds of lead.
After the project was completed, MT2 Firing Range Services was pleased to receive a letter from the Mayor of City Bryan Nelson who said:
“I am writing to express my great satisfaction in the quality of work performed by MT2’s personnel on the Police Department’s firearms range. MT2 successfully completed this project on time and within budget. Kerry Green, Project Manager, and Matt Leach, Project Assistant, were on time, went right to work, stuck to the schedule and left the range in better shape physically than when they arrived. They were extremely helpful in providing the police department with an understanding of the scope and depth of the project. They removed the lead from the berms, treated our range with the utmost care, and the completed work exceeded our expectations. We found all MT2 personnel to be very professional and personal in their work.
I would highly recommend MT2 to other entities looking for firing range services. Thank you for your time.”
